Hunger Action Month

What is Hunger Action Month?

September is Hunger Action Month, when we ask everyone in America to take action to fight hunger in their community, all month long. Hunger Action Month is your opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on our effort to feed more Americans than ever before. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, individuals can find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month.

How will you get involved? Check out this calendar for some ideas. Our top 3 suggestions are:

  1. If you’re an Santa Barbara County resident, give to the Foodbank through the Bank of America Give A Meal Triple Match beginning September 8.
  2. Donate to the Foodbank monthly through our “Harvest of the Month” club for the greatest impact year-round and select “Monthly” for “How often do you want to make this donation?” Regular donations are greatly appreciated and make for easier budgeting and financial forecasting.
  3. Social media savvy? Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter and tell us what you’re doing this #hungeractionmonth and inspire your friends and followers to take action with these images. Thanks!

Two years ago, third grader Jacob Mansbach volunteered at the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and saw an opportunity to make a difference. Combining his love for triathlons with his desire to help kids in his community he raised over $4,600 for the Foodbank that summer.  Last year, his friend Dario joined him and together they participated in a triathlon and raised over $13,000.

This summer, Jacob, now 10 years old, has invited an entire team of kids to join him.  This energetic group of kids will participate in the Santa Barbara Triathlon on August 24, 2014 with the shared goals of finishing the triathlon and raising over $50,000 for the Foodbank. The team’s intention is to provide nutrition and education to kids and families in our community through the Foodbank.  The team (comprised of third to seventh graders in the Santa Barbara School District) has dedicated their summer break to volunteering for the Foodbank, raising money and awareness, and learning all about the sport of triathlon.

Your donation will not only support the work of the Foodbank, it will send a clear message to this team of kids that they can make an impact on the lives of others and that helping their community can be extraordinary.

Inspired by women lawyer organizations in other cities, Santa Barbara Women Lawyers (SBWL) partnered with the Foodbank for the first annual Food from the Bar food and funds drive in 2011.

“The Foodbank has a proven track record of successfully providing nutritious food to families in Santa Barbara County. We are looking forward to our fourth drive in July, 2014 when we hope to make an even larger contribution to the Foodbank.”

This year, Food from the Bar will strive to raise $15,000 and collect 500 lbs. For the second year, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is the leadership sponsor. Food from the Bar provides the Foodbank with food and funds during the summer months when community giving is low but distribution levels remain high. Thank you to Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck for making a leadership gift to inspire others.

bhfs_logo_llp_rgbSanta Barbara Women Lawyers Board member and Drive co-organizer Jennifer Smith said “It has been another fantastic year. Everyone from the legal community really comes out in force to support the Foodbank. We can’t wait to celebrate with all our supporters once we reach our goal.”

All funds raised during the drive go directly to the Foodbank’s Picnic in the Park program to feed children during the summer months. The Foodbank reports that a staggering 84% of children in our County who receive free or reduced lunches during the school year get nothing in the summer. Through Picnic in the Park, the Foodbank provides free nutritious meals to these children during the summer throughout the County as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program.  The healthy meals are served at various parks in the county – Monday through Friday from 11:00 – 12:30 for ten weeks during the summer.  The cost per meal is only approximately $3.50.XX

Growing Cities: A Film About Urban Farming in America

Thursday, May 15, 2014 7pm – 8:30pm
Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu St, Santa Barbara CA 93101

growing cities
Growing Cities is a film about urban farming in America. At a time when so much negative attention is paid to the food system—from mad cows to factory farms—this film tells the inspiring stories of city-dwellers who are transforming their communities one vacant lot, backyard beehive, and rooftop farm at a time. Along the way these growers show that the urban farming movement is about a whole lot more than simply food and that everyone can take part in creating a healthier, more just, and sustainable food system.
