Susan Klucker

"How many of us grew up with the “Finish your Plate; There are starving people in the World” mantra? I took it seriously and self-initiated the collecting cans of food for the Trick or Treat holiday in 3rd grade."

In 1977, Susan became the Central California Coast representative for The Hunger Project that had the goal to end starvation within 20 years. The project goal was to dispel myths of scarcity and assumptions of the inevitability of the persistence of hunger to generate political will to address the fact that there is currently enough food to feed everyone on the planet.

Foodbanking was an idea whose time had come to put into practicality the “extra” many organizations had that could be redistributed as one part of the solution to an age-old problem. Foodbanks became the “postage stamp” that could send the leftover food to those in need.

Susan's Nutritional Science based career from Cal Poly State University was chosen to be in a position to promote all foods can be essential in proper context. She has been involved directly with the implementation of Statewide legislative efforts to increase healthy beverage options for high school students. Susan is currently employed as a Health Education Coordinator for the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department.

"We understand the paradox of obesity and malnutrition occurring in our society simultaneously and seek ways to promote access to healthy balances of various food types, especially fruits and vegetables."
